of the two Provinces on the subjects recently discussed during my visit to Canton. The result will be found recorded in the enclosed copy of a Note drawn up for the information of the Earl of Clarendon, giving the chief heads of the conversation that took place during two interviews with His Excellency on the 28th and 29th of last month.
I trust the result will be satisfactory inasmuch as the Viceroy gave me the fullest assurance that he perfectly recognizes the expediency of friendly relations being maintained between the Colonial and Chinese local Authorities at Canton, and such mutual exchange of good offices as may be required not only effectively to maintain the peace but to arrest crime on the border, by facilitating the arrest of thieves and other criminals, and the recovery of stolen property without delay, without the necessity of reference to higher authorities at Canton. He has accordingly promised to send instructions to that effect.
In regard to the Opium Stations and the action of the Revenue cruizers, he has also undertaken to issue further and stringent instructions to all the authorities and Officers engaged in this service.
